Firstly I want to start this post by stating the obvious. I should have finished this 3 week challenge by now. In fact I should have finished about 3 weeks ago. I just had a little set back or maybe a few:
- Not really enjoying these videos has been a huge barrier in my way. Turns out I am not the only one either. The discussion group for this program has turned into a real bitch fest with some very vocal participants voicing almost exactly how I feel and then some. It’s interesting to read that they all set off with the same expectations that the program should only be 20 minutes each day. Not over an hour each video with maybe 2 or 3 videos in a day. Then there is the comments about the quality of the videos – which I don’t actual find that bad. Plus you have some people who clearly are having NBN issues or whatever the US equivalent is for internet connection. Caching is a problem at my house too but I can live with that since it’s not the program providers fault.
My biggest barrier is the timing thing and not to mention I feel I am terribly unfit to be doing this work or inflexible or maybe just lost my mojo. - This is not yoga. Honestly I feel like I am watching a Jane Fonda video or Aerobic Oz Style. Perhaps this would have been better marketed as an online PT session with some yoga thrown in. I would have understood that. No amount of the instructor telling me a burpee is actually yoga is going to make me believe I have signed up for a yoga program.
- I also pulled a muscle in right rib cage which really stopped me in my tracks. Unfortunately it re-aggravated a shoulder / neck issue I thought I had under control. While I have been able to still practice my yoga in a mindful undertaking and self-monitor what I do, it left me a bit gun shy to go back to doing the videos.
You see it all happened while I was trying to watch the instructor leap from Downward Facing Dog into a plank pose (or something) and put her right ankle over her head while lifting the right elbow to the right knee (or something – seriously I think she was plucking her eyebrow with her toes) and at the same time I was doing my best to copy her.
Clearly I did not have anatomical alignment or as much flexibility (or something) as I was watching from under my armpit.
Yeah I don’t think watching and doing was not a very mindful thing to do but then this program never promises anything about teaching mindfulness.
I certainly have learned not to watch the video and do at the same time but rather watch and possibly watch again before hitting pause and then practicing. - Did I mention this is not yoga?
- The promise of 20 minutes is just not ringing true and one thing I get a bit antsy about is integrity. I am having a hard time reconciling that the marketing spruiks “all in just 20 minutes a day” and there is seriously days where the videos are over an hour long. Sure on some it says do as much as you like, but on others there is not a suggestion or hint to only do part of the session.
The bonus I have found with this program is I have unlimited time to access and unlimited viewing hours to complete the course. So the one off payment, which I might add I got to choose how much I wanted to pay (in US dollars of course) I can complete it over and over and over again if I am that way inclined. Although at this stage I will be lucky to get through the remaining videos.
Anyway its back to the Yoga Shred program for now and officially now I am up to the 3rd week. I just completed days 7 – 14 last week. Well almost all of them. In fact I might have only done 2 days of videos. My justification really is that half of them were repeats of the first week and I didn’t like them and then at least another 2 were fired up versions of the 2 that I did complete and it all sounded a bit difficult.
I mean titles such as “Arm and Core Shred Turned Up a Notch” just didn’t have appeal after I barely made it through one round of the “Arm and Core Shred” at sub-normal level. Okay perhaps I was just a bit gun shy and feared I would injure myself. Regardless I still showed up to the mat and I did turn the video on – I just am not sure what they did because I was too busy being my little old mindful self in the corner of my mat in Child’s Pose. That seemed like a safer bet than Arm and Core Shred Turned Up a Notch.
The whole 20 minute session things hasn’t improved either. The videos tend to go for 12 minutes with instruction to repeat 1 – 3 times. Maths is not my strong point but 2 x 12 does not add up to 20 minutes to me. In defence of the instructor there is 15 second breaks between exercises (still can’t call it yoga!) so that could bring it back close enough to 10 minutes.
While it does seem I am being very critical of the program and yes I am, I want to say I have learned a few things I will introduce into my practice particularly my core classes. I might just slow them all down a bit and introduce a more mindful approach. But I did like some of the exercises and some had a yoga flavour with definitely a strong anatomy alignment focus.
I can see some yoga core fusion classes coming out this and some techniques adopted for muscle fatiguing and awareness whenever emotional release is needed in some private sessions and perhaps some group classes.
I am not totally endeared to this program but I am curious about some her other programs, particularly after reading some comments on the discussions board. It appears that plenty of participants are saying this program is a real dud compared to others. Maybe after I finish this one I might investigate signing on for programs that have mindfulness in the title. It could well be right up my alley.
Anyway I will keep an open mind for another week and keep showing up each morning. Stay posted for another entry to Shred Me Mindful next week.
In the meantime keep being unique beautiful ones.
Namaste
